Lambda A Province Mar/April, 2011 Alice Moerk, President Francesca Veglia, Editor
LETTERS
From the President: Mar 28, 2011
Dear Sisters:
We are completing another year -- one full of joy and loss.
The memorial service for Mary Jett will be held at our April 9 meeting. Many of us attended her funeral Mass and participated in the service. Elsewhere, Ruth Sieber Johnson, our national secretary, lost her husband John. Condolences were sent by the chapter.
Our joys were shared with Philanthropies, to which several of us sent boxes of music, and we were able to host Dr. Liana Valente, director of the People-to-People, who spoke with us at our first meeting of the year. Musically, we toured the Sarasota Opera House, held programs of American Music, a carol sing, enjoyed the music of Halide Smith and the Pat Stenberg Memorial concert.
One meeting to go --April 9 at the home of Mary Webb -- when we will honor our beloved Mary Jett, elect officers for next year, vote on disbursement of the Stenberg moneys, then "dust off" some of our old instruments in a program titled "Do I Still Got It?" If anything, the latter should be fun (humiliating, maybe?!)
The slate put forth by the nominating committee is as follows:
President Alice Moerk
VP-Programs Carol Fetterman, Carol Luzio
VP-Yearbook Susan Byerly
VP-Ritual Erna Munsell
VP-Membership Jesica Roseboom
Rec. Secy Kathleen Crane
Treasurer Joyce Stiefel
Editor Francesca Veglia
Carol Luzio is now formulating programs for next year. If interested or you would like to offer your home for a meeting, please contact her.
At our Spring luncheon we will install officers. Any awards will also be presented then. The luncheon will be held at Freedom Village on Saturday, May 14, at 11:30.
The Stenberg Concert was quite enjoyable. We thank Amanda Lyon, the Daige-Roseboom Trio and Musica Sacra Cantorum for their performances. We did not take in as much money as in past years, but this is the list of disbursements recommended by the Board:
Sarasota Orchestra Education Program 200
Sarasota Music Festival 100
Sarasota Opera Assoc. Apprentice Artists Prg. 100
Sarasota Opera Assoc. Youth Opera Prg. 100
Sarasota Pops Orchestra 100
SAI Philanthropies, Inc 200
Florida Voices Ensembles, Inc 75
Manatee Concert Band 75
Gulf Coast Flute Choir 75
Gloriae Musicae 75
Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church 100
Anna Maria Island Orchestra & Chorus 100
Venice Symphony 100
Musica Sacra Cantorum 100
Total: *$1258
*$1258 is the intake for the concert. The total expenditures will be $1500.00
Additionally, the Board recommends we contribute $500 to the start-up fund for the Educational Outreach Program of the Perlman Music Program, moneys to be taken from our CD which was basically established for such a purpose.
Barbara Staton is also exploring possibilities for a National Arts Associate and Friends of the Arts memberships in our chapter.
With all this in mind for the next month and a half, I wish you a happy and restful -- and/or exciting Spring and Summer.
Roses to all, Alice
News From National 2012 Convention at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta - Mark your calendars for Aug. 2-6, 2012, the new dates reflect the scheduling conflict with the hotel. The theme for the convention will be The Healing Power of Music.
From the Editor’s Desk: I have already discussed the need for lessons on how to navigate our website. I have proposed that we have another meeting at my school next year to teach everyone how to get to the website, put it in their favorites, or bookmark it since you will want to come here often. Also, I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting in a bittersweet sort of manner. I hate singing for weddings and funerals because I am a cryer. It has to be the Sicilian in me that could have had a fabulous career as a wailer in many churches in Italy. (Yes, this really is a job.) Women are hired to sobb for weddings and funerals. I just do it naturally. So I will do my best for Mary's sake.
(Repost) Please look at the new contact page also, there will be a form that you can enter your name and email address. There is also a section for comments, please use that to send me home address changes that I can forward to Susan Byerly, and ideas that you might have for next years' programs, I can forward those to Carole. You may also want to use the comments section to give me information that you would like to share on this webpage.
Love and Roses, Francesca Veglia
P.S. It is that time of year when we are looking for fresh blood. No it isn't a blood drive or a teenage vampire show! However, if you would like to serve your SAI chapter, think of contacting an officer and get your name into the nominating commitee. I am looking for a someone else who is not planning on moving in the next year or so to take over this position. I could train you for then next few months, and then you could take it over next year. Think about it!
