Sisters,
Our November meeting was fun and exhilarating. Carol Luzio sang two remarkable folksong arrangements that blew our minds and Francesca Veglia-Dansky presented a glorious rendition of "Across the Wide Missouri." They were partnered by Mary Webb and Bonnie Wolfgram on piano. I was most impressed. Additionally, I played a cakewalk -- Juba -- by Nathaniel Dett and Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday."
Next, we prepare for the Christmas luncheon on December 13. If you've not done so, make your reservations quickly ($17.50 for the meal at the Bradenton Country Club). Check for information at our website and, in fact, you can make your reservation there at [email protected] or call Joyce Steifel or Estelle Schultz. Mary Stoltie will honor our founders at the luncheon, Joyce Steifel will lead us in carols, and Estelle Schultz has two students -- flute and piano composition -- who are extraordinary. A wonderful way to herald the Christmas season.
About Province Day, February 4th and 5th at Rollins College in Winter Park. After two quick trips to Orlando in one short week, I don't think my nerves can take I4 again in the near future (or ever?!). So, I would urge those interested to contact me and I'll give you the information to share with one another. I hope we will be well represented. I will try to send some of this to Francesca to include in this newsletter. For further information contact Sherry Orr at [email protected]. They will provide alum lodging in homes or you can go to a motel if you're there for both days. Applications can also be sent via email to [email protected].
In a different vein, I want to congratulate Barbara Staton for her work with the Perlman Committee. We're always proud of you, Barbara.
A reminder: January 9 is our board meeting at Francesca's, so there will be no regular meeting. We next meet on February 12 at Estelle Schultz' home for a program of the music of Halide Smith. Halide just lost her brother, so you might want to send her a note of condolence.
Our Stenberg Memorial Concert is Sunday, March 6 at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church in north Sarasota. If you've not yet received your tickets, they will be available at the December luncheon or contact Sue Byerly at [email protected]. She also has the directories. If you've not yet received yours, ditto.
Looking forward to seeing you at our holiday celebration. If not, have a blessed Christmas season.
Lots of roses, Alice
News:
Estelle Schultz and Alice Moerk presented Alice's "SkyDreams" during an Advent service at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Holmes Beach. The choir will also perform her carol, "Little Babe." Estelle is becoming a regular there!
From the Editor’s Desk:
I regret I have to run from one concert to the next again on the day of our luncheon so I will wish everyone a Happy Hannukah (it starts today Dec 1) a Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, spirit filled Ramadan, and an all over peace on earth, good will toward men. I hope my future and yours will be brighter in the new year!
I was happy to step in for Carole Cornman to sing at the last meeting. Alice did a wonderful job playing the Ellington, I am so sorry I lost you on the repeats in regards to turning the pages but you didn't skip a beat. And what a fascinating story about meeting him and almost conducting his choral pieces. Someone should be collecting the stories and musical education notes for our scrap book. I don't want to forget the history of the pieces Carol Luzio sang so beautifully either.
Please don't forget to look at the new sections of the web page where it says more...., you will see I finally was able to get the pictures from the October meeting downloaded into the website. Also, don't forget to send me updates with new information so that I can keep things currant.
Love and Roses, and Holly and Ivy,
Francesca Veglia-Dansky
P.S. Because this format is so fluid, all information will be updated as soon as I receive it. You may find some new information posted weekly. In that event, I suggest that you check this once a week to see what is new. If dates, of events change I will also try to highlight those so you will know what to change in your calendars.
Estelle's Emails
Estelle Schultz gave us an update for the December Luncheon, another new page has been added. Please click on the more... tab at the top and a pull down menu will list the Luncheon menu. You can go on that page and place your order and it will keep track of who is ordering what. But - you will still need to make payments to Joyce Steifel through the snail mail if you have not sent it already.
